Trans Iowa V.5 Questions?

I have had a few personal emails with questions about Trans Iowa. What questions do you have? What would you like to hear about and see specifically in race report?

Here is just a sampling of what some of you have asked.

– What was your post race meal?
– How much did you sleep afterward?
– How did the “Skins” help [or not help] the ride and recovery?
– What did you think of Casey’s pizza?
– Would you do the event again?
– What’d you think of us Great Plains folks?
– Would you race a different rig setup if you had to do it over?

More questions coming in…

so how much water did you carry?
How much food?
Spare gear?
Was it cold?
Did you have enough of everything?
What is the one thing you wished you had?
Were there things you wished you did not take?

Please keep them coming

More questions?

I’ve got one good question (as someone with an eye on ultras in the future). Contrast and compare (possibly rank?) this event to some of the other ultras you’ve done.

PS- I’m eyeballing the DVD next spring as a possibility.

and even more

I pulled the questions out of your post. I hope that’s ok.

How do you prepare for event like this?
Trainer rides?
How long would be the longest trainer ride needed to prepare for 24 hour race?

I want to do a 24 hour race thinking of Sebring next year. I live in NE so it is hard to get much long outdoor riding in the winter. I can do 3-4 hour rides when it is 30 not much longer. I’d done a Ironman in the rain and think I’m mentally tough and strange the longer I ride the easier it gets for me.

Thank you to all of you for reading my blog and leaving comments. Brandy would pass those along to me. Having the support of you, my readers, while on Trans Iowa kept me motivated until the finish. Thank you Brandy for managing the blog while I was away TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS!

I would like to share with you why I commented that Iowa is not flat. Please look at the elevation chart. Our starting elevation in Williamsburg was 751 feet our highest elevation was only 1100 feet somewhere around mile 175. Yet we gained almost 15,000 feet. The elevation gain was done on literally hundreds of 30-50 feet of gain rollers.

I think when people make the mistake to think that Iowa is flat they are thinking of the Interstate highway they traveled where the max grades are kept below 6%. This is not the case in the back country. There is no regard for standardizing the maximum grade. Many of these rollers were between 12-20% grades. Trust me my highly scientific method of calculating grade was on red alert non-stop. It works like this IF I’M IN MY GRANNY GEAR OF MY TRIPLE AND A 26 TOOTH COG IN THE BACK THEN THAT ROAD IS FREAKIN’ STEEP!

All for now…

Another Update from George

George just contacted me…he seems to be in better spirits than he was last night. When I asked him how he was doing, his reply was a familiar…

STARVING!

It’s not like I don’t hear him utter those very words Every. Single. Day. 😉

He seems to have found some more pizza and coke!

George is still with Jeremy and he’s reporting that they are thick as thieves. It’s nice to know he’s not out there all alone. They are 39 miles from the finish, in Belle Plaine.

I will update again as soon as I hear from him…thanks for checking in!

Checkpoint #3

George just got into checkpoint #3 in Traer. He says that he’s cold, tired and hurting. He’s still with Jeremy and they were riders 9 and 10 to check in. Apparently his earlier proclamation bears repeating…

Iowa is not flat, honey!

He’s eating cold pizza and heading out soon.

Feeling a little guilty that I get to go crawl into a warm bed now while he’s out there suffering!

No news is good news?

That’s what I’m going on right now. I haven’t heard from George since Le Grand, but he did post a sunset pic a couple of hours later. 🙂 I was just checking Guitar Ted’s audio blog which is now up and running and he’s reporting 31 DNF’s out of the 52 starters. WOW. Hoping for an update soon from George and will post as soon as I hear from him.
